I have a confession to make. I’ve knowingly used beauty products that are unsafe. It’s true. You see, as someone in the wellness business I like to research these sort of things. I know, I’m kind of a wellness nerd that way. So, I’ve known for quite a while that most conventional products have potential long-term health and environmental consequences. Even still, I ignored my own knowledge. I metaphorically stuck my fingers in my ears saying “lalalalala I can’t hear you!” Why? Because conventional products work and most of the “natural” or “green” products I tried just didn’t. I even tried the homemade stuff. And while I love coconut oil, baking soda, and apple cider vinegar in my kitchen, they just weren’t cutting it in my bathroom. You see, I have what I like to call “difficult” skin. I have oily zones with large, clogged pores but I also have some sun damage and age spots popping up too. I tend to break out, I tend to have redness but I’m also not getting any younger so I still want to address some fine lines before they’re not so fine anymore. And while I believe nature is amazing and more wise than we give her credit for, I also need a little science in my life. Some targeted, specific treatments to address the multitude of skin issues I’ve got going on.
Unfortunately I hadn’t found this unicorn of skin care. You know one that combines the power of nature and science and focuses on personal and environmental safety as well as performance. I mean, it sounded too good to be true so I wasn’t even really looking to be honest. Instead I was either sacrificing performance in the name of safety or safety in the name of performance and I kind of figured that’s just how it was going to be in my lifetime. Maybe someday…
Then I found Beautycounter. And the clouds parted and angels started singing, and a beam of light came from the sky… ok not really. But trying these products for the first time was heavenly.
But what really got me was their mission. They are devoted to transparency and are looking to revolutionize this industry so that no one ever has to wonder whether or not their products are safe or what potential side effects they might have. Not everyone is a wellness nerd like myself and they shouldn’t have to be. This information should be volunteered to the consumer so they can make an informed choice. Beautycounter is not only doing this in their own business model but also addressing the policies and laws that would make this an industry standard.
I, personally, would have become a Beautycounter customer regardless. But their mission is why I had to become a consultant as well. I needed to be a part of this movement and make it my own business to tell people that, not only do you no longer have to weigh safety and performance against each other, but your children may never have to question ANY their beauty products ever again. How wonderful would that be? Insert track: Louis Armstrong “What a Wonderful World”
Here’s the thing… over in the European Union they’ve banned over 1400 questionable ingredients from their beauty products. These are ingredients that have been linked to cancer, infertility, hormone disruption, developmental issues in children… and I must say, I honestly was surprised by this. I didn’t even realize there were 1400 ingredients that could be used in skin care, let alone that many that are potentially unsafe! I mean, let that sink in. We are potentially exposed to thousands and thousands of ingredients everyday. Wouldn’t you want to know that some sort of action has been taken to screen out the potentially harmful from the safe?
Well, if you live in the States I have bad news and good news. Bad news is we only ban about 30 ingredients from our beauty products. (Woopty doo). The good news is Beautycounter, as a company, bans 1500 questionable ingredients from our product line. That’s right. We 100 upped the EU! Get on our level! Kidding. Well, sort of. While we don’t aim to be the ONLY beauty brand, we do aim to set the standard in this industry so that one day ALL beauty brands prioritize safety and performance the way we do.
But for the time being, I am so thankful to not only have the option of this amazing and effective cosmetics line that actually cares about my safety, but even more so to be a part of this company and its mission. My hope is to spread this information as far as my reach can go and to help people make informed decisions about their wellness and the importance of a safer beauty regimen. And the refined sugar-free icing on this gluten-free cake? I get to make money while I do so and set my own hours. But seriously, how cool is that? This is information I would want to share REGARDLESS. But in addition to providing us with amazing skin care and taking our safety into account, Beautycounter also provides the opportunity to better your financial situation.
