Straight-forward Moscow Mule

Hey guys! So, I’m not really a big drinker. I maybe drink a few times a month at most. Probably twice a month is a good guestimate. Definitely not daily or even weekly. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like alcohol! I actually really enjoy all kinds! I just choose to keep it to a minimum.

Having said that, on the days when I really am craving a cocktail, I will go ahead and have one! But I like to find a happy balance between something that’s delicious but also isn’t going to completely blow my fitness lifestyle or make me feel like garbage the next day.

This drink happens to fit the bill. And, on top of that, it’s so easy to make and requires very few ingredients. Three to be exact. It’s my Straight-forward Moscow Mule. I call it that because it’s everything you need for an awesome Moscow Mule and nothing you don’t!

I do have a few things to say about the ingredients I choose for this cocktail. First things first. You need a good vodka. Because this is such a simple recipe, if one of the ingredients is sub-par the whole drink will taste off. So, I like to go for Tito’s. I love Tito’s because it mixes well with just about EVERYTHING and it’s certified gluten-free. Most vodkas contain gluten which surprised me. Now, I personally am not celiac or even gluten-intolerant. I actually do OK with gluten from time to time. BUT I like to refrain from gluten for the most part because I notice that I have a hard time regulating my appetite when I eat or drink gluten. For instance, I will eat an entire regular pizza but if I order gluten-free I am still able to enjoy myself but stop when I’m full. It’s kind of weird. Also, staying relatively gluten-free is like an automatic way of ensuring I pick more nutrient dense options. So, instead of pasta I use zuchinni or spaghetti squash, or instead of bread I turn my sandwich or burger into a salad with lots of veggies. So, when I DO decide to have gluten I want it to be in the form of something crazy delicious and amazing such as some crusty sourdough bread or a cronut. A true indulgence. The last thing I want to do is drink gluten. So, why not opt for a gluten free vodka that’s just as, if not more, delicious than the rest? That’s my take on it. But you feel free to drink whatever vodka you like.

Alright, a Moscow Mule is nothing without ginger beer. And I happened to stumble upon the most delicious ginger beer ever! The brand is simply called Q and they make the best ginger beer with relatively clean and minimal ingredients. Especially compared to other brands. I do have to say that one of their ingredients is somewhat controversial. To sweeten their ginger beer they use agave nectar. A lot of people shy away from agave because it is super high in fructose and I get that. I personally feel, even though the amount of fructose in agave is comparable to that of high fructose corn syrup, I am still better off getting it from a more natural source. Likewise, if I’ve made the decision to drink alcohol, I’ve already decided to put my ideal health goals aside. I hate to say it people, but alcohol is just not good for you! But it is enjoyable and I believe, can be worked into a healthy lifestyle as long as you’re making conscious and informed decisions about it. But when I step back and look at the bigger picture, I think it’s a little trivial to obsess over an ingredient like agave nectar in a cocktail that already has alcohol in it. So, if you’re that concerned about sugar you probably just shouldn’t drink. And if you aren’t but want a better option than high fructose corn syrup, this is your ginger beer. Plus it just tastes SOOOO good!

Other than that the only ingredient is lime, so let’s get to the recipe!
